Fitness

So, I stopped running on pavement for quite some time because of knee pains. I tried substituting it with basketball and yoga. I hoped the constant sprinting and side shuffling in basketball would strengthen my legs. Yoga allowed me to strengthen my leg muscles with the balancing poses and deep stretching. Now that summer is finally here in Chicago, I braved running on the city’s streets.

So far this week I’ve ran 2 one-milers at about 9 minutes and I hope to continue this pace. After each run my knee (left one specifically) has only felt minimal discomfort. I’m crossing my fingers for the least amount of injuries possible.

Fitness goals
- do some 5k races
- boot camp with some amigos (twice a week! Yikes)
- basketball once a week
- incorporate more body weight workouts into my routine (pull-ups, push-ups, squats and lunges)

Be like the tortoise, not the hare.

Fascinating! So fun to see how the athletes’ bodies have optimized for the different sports. Kind of like a body menu: You want this body, do this sport.

Overall fitness

Well, I’ve been congested, coughing, and full of phlegm for the past week and a 1/2. I’m still sick, but not as bad as it initially was. I didn’t do any exercise except for the random 50 or so pushups I did 2-3 times a week. I feel lousy and that is no way to step into fall and even more so winter.

So today, which will probably be one of the last few days of beautiful weather left in Chicago, I went for my first run in weeks. I just did a mile and I tried to gas it as much as possible. I completed in 8min43sec. So far so good. I’m gonna try to run consecutively 3-4 times a week. Start off with a mile and slowly build my way back up to the 3-4 miles I used to run all the time.

…and yes, I’m still using my vibram fivefingers. Those goofy little toe shoes. Still no joint pain and I’ll believe in them until they do me wrong.

…It’s nice to feel sweat. It’s nice to breathe in hard for air. Let’s you know you’re still alive.

So, I went for my 1st 3 mile run in awhile. It was also the longest run I had in these shoes. I originally said to myself I would only run for a mile because I was scared of foot/leg pain, but after the initial mile I decided to go on my usual route.

During the run I felt great and light on my feet. It sucked stepping on rocks and pebbles cause the lack of cushion on these shoes. Other than having to avoid such obstacles they felt pretty damn good.

When I woke up this morning I feared all sorts of pain, but all I had was a sore right calf which disappeared after walking around a little. No pain in my left knee, no leg fatigue. Perhaps these shoes are as good as they say. Before I completely praise them I’ll give them a few more runs, but I only expect better :).
